Sundays 11:30-12:40pm, following the religious school calendar
We are pleased to offer an Adult B’nei Mitzvah program beginning this fall! Taught by Rabbis Steve Folberg, Sam Rose, Rebecca Epstein, and Kerry Baker, the curriculum will take students through a deep and reflective Jewish journey in which we will explore Jewish texts, liturgy, and history and discover the meaning and importance of Judaism in our own lives. This class is a great way to build community, and celebrate your Judaism - whether you never had the opportunity to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or you want to do it again from an adult perspective. The two-year Adult B’nei Mitzvah program will culminate in a Shabbat service led by participants in May, 2018 (exact date or dates to be determined, based on number of participants).
The Adult B’nei Mitzvah Program is open to members of Congregation Beth Israel who were born Jewish or have finalized their conversion to Judaism. Those who became bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah at age 13 are welcome to participate as well. Classes will meet on Sundays during the school year from 11:30-12:40pm, for 21 sessions following the Religious School calendar, for two years. There will be short weekly assignments which will include the writing of personal reflections, as well as preparatory reading. Members of the class are required to attend Shabbat morning services monthly while classes are in session. Members must be able to read Hebrew by the beginning of year two, and will be assessed by Sarah Avner in January of that same year, in order to adequately prepare for reading Torah at the culminating service. This is a big commitment and we understand that our members’ lives are busy. If you feel you can’t attend at least 80% of the planned classes (34 of the 42) then you might want to wait until the next cycle and focus on your Hebrew skills or a particular area of Judaic study at this time.
