Congregation Beth Israel is excited to announce that it is forming many Chavurot to provide opportunities for its membership to build friendships, socialize, study and enjoy Jewish life.

Take the SURVEY!

FAQs:

What is a Chavurah?

A Chavurah is a small group of temple members who gather to learn, socialize and enjoy Jewish life together. A Chavurah has many different looks, and can include adults, families, couples, or singles who are committed to building a unique bond, an “extended family” at CBI.

What does a Chavurah do?

Each Chavurah is unique and decides on its own blend of Jewish experiences. Chavurah can focus on study, observance of holidays together, socializing (dinners, etc.) and sharing simchas. Each group is unique in working towards developing a meaningful experience for those in that group.

When does a Chavurah meet?

Each Chavurah generally meets once a month. The group decides on specific dates and times convenient to the group.

How do I join a Chavurah?

What are other people from previous generations of Chavurot saying?

"We were looking for a way to connect with the Temple and with families like ours and to build relationships. I count them all among people for whom I care very much about their entire family, and I think they feel the same way...I have made those connections and I do have folks to greet at Temple and I enjoy sharing holidays and other times with them. We have built a history together now, and that counts for a lot.  I'm glad they were part of my children's Jewish upbringing and are still part of my life." -Leslie Friedlander

Our strength as a congregation comes from the hundreds of individuals who give their time and talent to help our community. We are fortunate to have many committed volunteers, but there is so much more that we could accomplish. Even giving just a few hours of your time can have a huge impact. It is also a great way to meet fellow congregants.

Whatever your interest, there are many volunteer opportunities at CBI from specific short term projects to on-going committees.

Congregation Beth Israel is Austin's oldest congregation, but we are also oriented toward Tikkun Olam (mending the world) and social justice. For the past 10 years we have dreamed of cutting our carbon footprint and setting an example for the Austin faith community by going solar. Last year, three of our members, Forrest Novy, Leon Barish and David Todd, spearheaded an effort to finally bring this dream to fruition.

These videos were taken by Rabbi Folberg during the construction of the panels.
